CLIMATE LAW & POLICY PROJECT
NAMES NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, CARROLL MUFFETT
Washington, DC – Climate Law & Policy Project (CLPP) today announced the appointment of Carroll Muffett as the organization’s new Executive Director.
Muffett, who most recently served as Deputy Campaigns Director for Greenpeace, brings to CLPP a deep understanding of climate policy and a long track record of success in non-profit development and management. He assumes his new duties on July 20, 2009.
Muffett will focus on raising CLPP’s visibility within the environmental and funding communities; expanding programs to protect vulnerable countries and communities from the impacts of climate change; promoting deeper reductions of greenhouse gas emissions; and developing new policy approaches to mitigate climate change and help nations adapt to unavoidable warming.
Donald Goldberg, President and Founder of CLPP, said “I have had the pleasure of working with Carroll since he first began his career. His strong leadership and management skills combined with his keen intellect position him as the ideal candidate to serve as CLPP’s Executive Director. His ability to collaborate with diverse groups will be invaluable as CLPP continues its work to protect vulnerable communities from climate impacts.”
“The world is slowly awaking to the profound human rights impacts of global warming,” said Muffett. “The team at CLPP was among the first to not only recognize these impacts, but to mobilize the power of the law to address them. I am honored to be joining them in that effort.”
Prior to his term at Greenpeace, Muffett served as Senior Director for International Conservation at Defenders of Wildlife. He has practiced law with Covington and Burling, worked as an independent attorney for the World Bank Environmental Law Department and served as a fellow with the Center for International Environmental Law. Muffett is a member of the IUCN Commission on Environmental Law and the American Society of International Law, and sits on the boards of the Species Survival Network and the Journal of International Wildlife Law and Policy. CLPP works to prevent the impacts of climate change from causing irreversible harm to humanity and the earth’s natural systems by protecting the human rights of vulnerable communities, promoting deeper reductions of the emissions that cause global warming, and developing and analyzing relevant policy approaches.
CLPP aims to bridge the gap between the urgent and bold action that climate science and real-world observations indicate is necessary and the proposed commitments put forth in domestic and international political forums. The organization was founded in 2007.
